Coimbatore, also known as Kovai, is one of the most prominent cities of Tamil Nadu and is a major industrial city in India. It is also the third largest city in the state of Tamil Nadu and the administrative headquarter of Coimbatore District. The city has been reputed for long in the national scenario of India due to its industrial endeavor and success. For decades at a stretch it has been serving as the emblem of development in India and is known for its glorious contribution in the domain of textiles, engineering firms, automobile parts manufacturers, health care facilities, educational institutions, pleasant weather, and hospitality. For all these it is called the Manchester of South India.
The strategic location of the city is on the banks of the river Noyyal and derives its name from the local Goddess here, Koniyamman. Koniyattamuttu, which was anglicised into Coimbatore in the later period. However, it is also true, that much is not known about the origin of this city. In various statges of history it has been ruled by different dynasties, the most prominent of them had been the Chola. It was in the mid-9 th century when the second Chola empire had its emergence and gained the territory encompassing Coimbatore. They were instrumental in establishing a planned layout, with the Koniamman temple in the center. Even, for a considerable period, the city was under the sway of the Vijanagar empire. Nevertheless, the present success of the city commenced with the establishment of the British rule.
The primary industries of the city, as already mentioned, are engineering and textiles. Besides the city is also famous for having a good amount of hosiery and poultry industries. But the most striking aspect is that most of the industries are either run by entrepreneurs or community financing and if not, then by family based businesses. In the recent years the city has also progressed in the saga of Information Technology and several companies have started their operations.
Coimbatore is the highest revenue earning district in Tamil Nadu although agriculture is still the major occupation in the district.
